That is a common misconception, which I used to share; however, this is a railroad trestle, part of a switchback. The trains used to cross the river at the now-abandoned railroad bridge, then follow the tracks all the way up to the falls. At that point, they would switchback onto this trestle to unload the iron ore. The trains would then back up over the river and turn around at the turntable, which is still located next to the bridge. The two furnaces were in front of this structure. The slag heaps are still there, along with some remnants of the brick walls.
