If you do your research, you will find that this tree, the same as the "Big tree in a big field" and "McBaine Burr Oak" is known to native Missourians as the buffalo tree. This name was bestowed by the early settlers crossing the Missouri river bottoms in their quest to move west. The buffalo would graze in the vicinity and lay under this tree during the hot summer days. The story was told that there were hundreds of buffalo that grazed and lived around this tree. Perhaps preserving the original name will stimulate viewers imagination and help preserve this beautiful old tree.

This is a great shot! Thank you, Ryan for photo-documenting and sharing so much of the history and landscape of the places you have lived and visited. This area looks like it would be a nice highlight for a day trip that I will certainly have to take sometime!
