The present view of this site is now a petrol station and car park in the foreground with the Tesco supermarket in the background. The rest of the car park is to the left. A 'before' photo can be seen under 'Brewery Street (2001) - pre-Tesco'.

This line was the major route from Manchester Central to London St.Pancras. You should be able to find a few more railway photos of mine taken in this area in the early 60s

Ghostrider, these photos are so evocative. I only discovered Heaton Mersey MPD in the last year or so of steam. (I'm at present having an email converstaion with my brother, looking at google Satellite Maps, trying to describe to him just where the shed was - and WHY!)

Compare this scene with a photograph I took in 1961 with a train approaching Stockport Tiviot Dale Station

Photograph taken from Ashton Road bridge which has was filled in to accommodate Morrisons supermarket. The railway was also severed at a point near the back of the train to make way for the motorway - now the M60. ("Camel's Hump" is visible in the distance but long gone.)

Britannia Class loco.70032 taken on the 14th August 1960 at 6.30 in the morning with a basic camera - hence the poor quality of the image! This scene is now barely recognisable due to the removel of the railway and Morrisons supermarket being built over the site.

The trackbed is now a public footpath through the tunnel. Another photograph, taken in 2008, shows the change in scenery over the 47 years !
