Every August 15 since time immemorial, a mass has been celebrated on the Feast of the Virgin at the Seven Fountains shrine in Montmin. The shrine is almost certainly pre-Christian, likely associated in prehistory with the cult of the Celtic river goddess Vesuna.

Faverges, an industrial city of some 7500 people, is dominated by the 14th-century tower of its castle. It is halfway between Annecy and Albertville and was a crossroads even in Roman times. Home to the excellent Viuz Archeological Museum.

The castle of Miolans, long used by the kings of Savoy as a prison, (the Marquis de Sade escaped from this fortress) now overlooks the peaceful vineyards of St Pierre d'Albigny in the combe de Savoie. See vin-de-savoie for information about the vineyards and varietals of Savoie.

There is just one of these meeting points at the airport, so that if you must meet someone at Cointrin, be sure to specify this spot, which is in the arrival area, just outside customs, on the Swiss side.
