I'd love to go to the West Bank to take some pictures but the Israeli Army would probably shoot me dead on some spurious security excuse.

Rightfully or wrongfully, the facts on the ground determine "Legal" ownership ... he who has either the majority of voters or (sadly) militarily controls the land is the defacto ruler be it Russia or China or Israel.
