Thanks. I was hoping the snowfall would have covered the tracks but it hadn't. I wasn't even the first one up, either. Maybe I'll have better luck this winter.

It's probably a shift or commemorative toponym, where places and towns get named after something that's going on or where they've been. It's probably the same reason there's a "California" in Missouri,a "London" in Kentucky, or a "Rome" in New York. As a guess, it might have been named by a prospector who knew about the California gold rush, as there are old gold mines in the Huerfano Valley (the green area to the east of the glacier), some still (slightly) worked.
