Dianne - even telling you to just leave the camera on Auto might leave you with so many options your head will spin, since the D5000 has so many 'scene' settings. But it would be really well worth experimenting with the same scene at all the different 'Scene' options you have. If you can notice the resultant shutter speed, f stop, and ISO for each option, it will help you learn the range of manual settings to try.
