Cartier Square Drill Hall (1879) is the oldest continually operating militia drill hall in Canada. It is the home of the Governor General's Foot Guards and the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa.

Don't know if you were aware of this photo which was taken from almost exactly the same spot as yours.

It would be over two years ago. The photo was taken in 2005 (almost exactly! 2005-07-16). I will send you a link to the other photos in the series.

The base is now closed and will probably be developed into condominium housing in the next few years.

Now the Canal is known as The World's Largest Skating Rink to balance the narrowness of the Winnipeg efort.
