John,

WOW!!! I am from Southwest Kansas and have always loved the grasslands and deserts of the southwest. But for the past ten years, I've been in Vermont. 2008 January I took a trip out west by myself and tried to absorb all the beauty I could. Glad to know my photo brought warm feelings in a personal way to someone I didn't even know. Thanks for noticing.

This is a beautiful photo of what I think would be the loneliest place on the planet. I so much want to visit and have wanted to for years...someday.

This is such a pretty picture of a sunrise/sunset in this part of the country. I absolutely love this quiet part of New Mexico.

Badlands, eh??? I'd love to visit those places. Actually any place in the plains is fine with me. Currently I live in VT, and believe me, it beautiful, but nothing, at least in my mind, beats the plains. Yes, these do look kinda like the pictures of SW ND that I've seen. About the river theory, there is a river called the Cimarron, which is dry around Satanta, KS (which itself is about 2 miles or so east of where this picture is.) The land directly around this river in at least this part of the country is sunken, dry, and sort of sandy, whereas all around it is flat farm land. More than you were probably asking, I'm sure, but I love sharing, I guess. Again, thanks - Mario
