This is known locally as "The Powder House" and dates back to when gunpowder for use in the slate mines was bought in by boats, unloaded and stored here (Ynys Cyngar) well away from the town. The house was where the shipments were recorded and the cargo guarded.

No! It's a bench mark, and shows that the horizontal line has been recorded by the Ordnance Survey as a known height above mean sea level. It should appear on Ordnance Survey maps as a spot height.

actually it was demolished by a Manchester property developer who had owned it since 1961 and tried to get permission to replace it with an estate of "executive" houses.
