The frame is fine. It is called a 'bar frame'. Very strong and favoured in the USA for large locomotives running on rough track. Most engines however use 'plate frames' which are easier, cheaper and more flexible - but which crack more easily, needing re-welding. The bar frme suggests that this engine was built in the USA, probably by Baldwins.
