This small and ominous looking building was the Struhof Camp Gas Chamber. One dreadful night fifty young girls of many origins were brought here and herded in like cattle, the doors were slammed shut as the girls were slowly gassed to death by the exhaust fumes pumped in from the diesel engines running outside.
Their bodies were then taken by trucks to the Reich University in Strasbourg to be hacked and dissected by Nazi Doctors in the name of German Science.
As I came to the end of my visit to this one and only concentration-death camp on French soil, I was met by a crowd of German Jewish schoolchildren who sang a Jewish song to those of the Jewish Faith who were murdered in Natzweiler.
The Monument overshadowed the young children but their song echoed around the camp of death as if to give their own thanks for their Life and Freedom that they now had, and in memory to those many, many thousands who were murdered here.
This is the oven at Struthof where on the early evening of July 6th, 1944 four S.O.E women prisoners were killed with a deadly injection of caustic disinfectant to writhe in agony as the poison slowly killed them. Thought to be dead, one of the four women was still alive as she was rammed into the oven there to be burned alive.
My card and a poppy to Remember them and Their Courage is on the floor on the right side of the oven
The four who were savagely murdered and Cremated were...
Andree Borrel (Denise) Aged 25.
Diana Rowden (Paulette) Aged 29.
Vera Leigh (Simone) Aged 41.
Sonia Olschanezky (Suzanne) Aged 21.
