Best thing about this location is that you are within 3 miles of the historical "Schnappsville Tavern" at 44.972n 90.025w (was located on Cty Hwy M and Spruce Lane)
The sign is 1,093 feet away from the correct position. The sign's position was chosen because of its proximity to the road. Also, it marks a point that is halfway in between the North Pole and the Equator and also 1/4th of the way around the Earth from the Prime Meridian, making it the center of Northwestern Half-Hemisphere.
The SooLine sign on this caboose was painted by Donald E Leese of Mercer WI. His Father, Charles P Leese Sr, worked for SantaFe and invented the first spring suspension for rail cars. The rail car suspension used on today's rail cars are enhaned versions of Charles P Leese Sr's invention and have a striking resembance to the initial version.

Is this the viaduct that the wooden trestle ran above? I seem to remember that one being partially crushed when we used to play in the ravine in the 50's

This thing has been demolished. Not historical and rotten to the core. Gone due to disney look.
This was the Catholic church in the 1950's. St. James, I think!
This is First Presbyterian Church (At least it was in the 1950's when I attended it!)
The ore dock is such a part of Ashland and it's history - it should be repaired.
If most people remember, there were over 20 docks at one time and Ashland was known as "Whistle Stop".
I remember ice fishing near the dock and fishing in the "diamonds" in the summer time for crappie and trout and northern pike.
