The position you have indicated is only 1.5 miles from the runway. The picture was taken 4.5 miles from the runway, about 1.4 miles south of Rockaway beach. In other words you were over the ocean. That is why the buildings can be seen in the lower right corner of the picture. They were not behind the camera when you took the picture. You should know. You were there.

it is a rollout because the plane has landed and is slowing down, rolling down the runway losing speed, hence the term rollout.

The plane is still in landing config because it has not completed the rollout, when sufficient speed has been lost the flaps will be retracted as well as the spoilers and the plane will taxi to the gate...

Pollution? Fortunately, no. It is actually steam, or more precisely water vapor. This facility (Essex County Resource Recovery Facility) burns garbage to produce electricity. Better than landfilling, and cleaner (less greenhouse gases) than burning coal. I do emission testing at these places, so i know a bit about it...

This is the Pulaski Skyway. This view shows the Passaic River crossing. Newark is on the left and Kearny is on the right. It carries US Routes 1 & 9 express traffic. It is a primary approach to the Holland Tunnel for commuters heading for lower Manhattan, New York City.
