'Lone Tree' has, I see now, been afforded some protection. In the early 1970s it was a key navigation aid for drivers leaving the Basra Road near Mutla to reach the Khor as-Subiya along the top of the Jal az Zor ridge. However it also was a tempting source of firewood for nomadoic bedu, and a shooting practice site for 'hunters' - but at a great cost to sheltering birdlife!
