packman97's conversations

Great visibility usually and lots to see. Lots of flounder on the bottom. Watch the Amberjacks turn on their sides and pound the ocean bottom to scare them up from the sand and eat them! Big sea turtles at one time. Thousands of Bait fish! This was 43 years ago when I dived the wreck.

Originally built as the blockade runner Princess Royal, she was captured by Union forces and sold as a war prize. Still as the Princess Royal, she served the remainder of the war as part of the Union navy. At the end of the war, she was sold at auction and renamed the Sherman. She carried passengers and freight until she sprung a leak in heavy seas in 1874. All attempts to stop the leak and save her failed and she eventually sank while under tow to Wilmington. Max depth is 55 feet.

400 foot passenger/freighter sunk by U-123 in 1942. The ship was not carrying any passengers at the time of sinking. Of the 47 man crew, only 4 survived the attack and sinking. Max depth is 90 feet.

Coast Guard cutter that was lost at sea in a hurricane in 1944 along with the USGC Jackson while escorting a torpedoed liberty ship and the salvage tug that was towing it into port. Both the Bedloe and Jackson are nearly identical ships so there is some confusion as to which ship is located at which wreck site. Only 12 men out of a crew of 38 survived until rescue 2 days later.

300+ foot landing/repair ship that was sank in 1992 as an artificial reef. Max depth is 65 feet.

In 1942, the U-352 fired torpedoes at the Coast Guard cutter Icarus. The torpedoes missed and the Icarus began depth charging the submarine. Eventually, the U-352 was forced to the surface where the survivors abandoned ship before it sank. 33 men (one later died if his injuries) out of a crew of 45 survived the sinking and were picked up by the Icarus. Max depth of the shipwreck is 110 feet.

The above photo is of the W.E. Hutton. Recent evidence suggests that it is the ship located at the site previously believed (and still marked on charts) to be the Papoose. The Hutton was sunk in 1942 by torpedoes from U-124. The wreck lies upside down with a max depth of 120 feet.

Freighter en route to Norfolk from Cuba with a load of manganese ore when it was struck by a torpedo from U-158 and sank within 3 minutes. Only 7 men from a crew of 28 survived the sinking. Max depth is 80 feet.

400+ foot freighter that was struck and sank by a torpedo from U-124. Before sinking, the ship broke in half and the two sections settled on the bottom approximately 2 miles from each other. Each section is treated as a separate dive site. Max depth is 140 feet.
