I am working on a project to photo document the most common forest types on the Quinault Reservation right now. So I am seeing some stands for the first time in many years. Some of the stands I have been looking at were planted in 1974-77, when I was in charge of the tree planting program. It has been thrilling to see the results of all that hard work.
Thanks Chris. Sometimes I am bothered that the tree canopy captures so much of the sunlight that little vegetation grows on the ground, thus reducing the plant diversity of the forest. However, at least this is a mixed stand of many tree species and not just one.
Another point I find a bit bothersome is how young some stands are when they log them. I see 35 year old forest stands being logged right at the time they are beginning to put on large volumes of wood. Individual landowners and timber corporations do not necessarily have an incentive to protect humanity’s investment in forests because their short-term interest do not always align with society’s long-term interest.
