The Tokaanu Thermal walk takes about 15-20 minutes. The walk passes through an area of hot springs which has been used by the Ngati Tuwhareoa for more than 500 years for bathing and cooking of food. Maori recognised and used the curative properties of the mineral waters.
In 1887 the Paramount Chief of the Tuwhareoa people - Te Heuheu Tukino IV - donated the mountain peaks of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu to the nation (of New Zealand).
This 'gift' was the genesis of the Tongariro National Park and the first of its kind ever made by an indigenous people.
Wow! The day I crossed that area the weather was awful. Your picture helps me to have an idea of what I missed.
