The Scottish National Heritage website explains about this and has a diagram showing movements of the shoreline over the last century or so. This confirms that the top of the beach was outside the concrete tank obstacles at this point in the 1980s.

They are sink holes where limestone and peat have dissolved in the marsh leaving very deep and very round holes.
