The explanation is quite simple, and no the photo was not staged, it was a normal evening stopping train..
The clues are all in the picture, and remembering that the side of the train looks pretty much the same anywhere, think of the light reflected from the side (especially the front 10 metres or so) while the shutter is open.... We get a light gradient from max at the point where the shutter opens, to zero at the point where it closes! Simple, and no photoshop!
