Now a tranquil village green, this 2000 year old junction was once the cause of five mile holiday traffic jams when the narrow road on the right was the A303.

This narrow road was once the main A303 route to the West County and is part of the original Roman Fosse Way.

The idyllic surroundings of Ilchester disguise the even more historic line of the road which has remained unchanged for at least 2000 years.

Hello Jeff,

Since I have lived in Somerset, Sparkford has reverted from a busy traffic laden village back to its previous peaceful rural state. All thanks to the new stretch of the A303 acting as a bypass and taking all the busy through traffic away. With the backdrop of nearby Cadbury Castle and rolling hills, Sparkford is quite a pleasant place.

By contrast, Bournemouth which I remember from my childhood as a quiet peaceful seaside town has been transformed to an area of heavy traffic. It takes about an hour to drive from Bournemouth to Sparkford so your cycle ride must have been quite a journey.
