Over the last two centuries the pulse of a continent has rolled through this tight little valley: from the early Mormon pioneers to the transcontinental railroad to the coast-to-coast Interstate 80 express highway. Each squeezed through Echo Canyon and disgorged between the rugged brown cliff and the lighter-shaded, angled hill at the extreme right of this photo. After exiting the Canyon, in 1869, the Union Pacific Railroad made a right turn (toward the upper middle of the photo) and headed toward Weber Canyon (pronounced Weeber), Provo and ultimately the "Golden Spike" at Promontory, Utah.
