This WAS the Lusaka Boys School & Lusaka Girls School swimming pool back in the 1960's. The recent housing development surrounding the pool is on what was then part of the playing fields shared by the schools.
It's good to see the pool is still put to good use!

I forgot to mention, Los Angeles Road (why did they choose that name?) was called "Rennie Road". It was then a non-dual carriageway, with a row of mature trees on the south side. There was then a raised dirt cycle path next to the school; I managed to persuade Lusaka City Council to tarmac it in 1964. I see all that is now gone & replaced with a dual carriageway. I used to live in nearby "Keith Close", now called Mushemi Road and I regularly cycled to the nearby airport to watch aircraft such as DC3s, DC4s, DC6s, Viscounts, Bristol Britannias & then the VC10's. The boys at Lusaka Boys School were given the day off to see the inaugural flight arrive, of the B.O.A.C VC10! Yes, VC10's did actually land on that very short runway, without problems. Now, of course, civilian craft normally land at The International Airport, about 15 miles away. Recently a passenger jet did accidentally land at the city airport!

Lusaka Municipal swimming pool used to be near here, in the triangle between Luano Road, Church Road & Bwinjimfumu Road (probably behind the petrol station shown). I enjoyed many afternoons (after school) swimming there, between 1962 & 1964. The pool closed in about 1965 when the Olympic Pool was built elsewhere.

My family lived in Lusaka from November 1962 (the population then was 120,000, 10% of the present population)!
Lusaka Cathedral (as it was then known) had only just finished being built and was famed for its huge stained glass windows. The cathedral also featured on a postage stamp (one of a 3-piece set) that was released at Independence on 24th October 1964. The stamps were released for only 14 days, so are quite rare; fortunately I have the set.

Photo taken from the 10th floor of the Tenerife Playa Hotel in early July 2005.
On my previous visit to Tenerife in December 1982, this beautiful road tunnel left a firm imprint on my memory & I just HAD to photograph it upon my return.
