mikeallmey's conversations
A derelict wreck until completely rebuilt and restored, thanks to a lot of prompting by Elizabeth Perkins of Birmingham City Council. Last lived in during the 1960s, now a Grade II Listed Building, The Hovel has the internal space of a modern 1-bed flat, yet sits in a 1/3 acre garden plot, the remnants of a former commercial nursery. The resoration was from the ground-up using as much of the original materials as could be recovered from the site. All fixtures and fittings were either restored or re-made by hand; the glass is hand-made and even the front door lock and key were hand-crafted by the same locksmiths who look after Litchfield Cathederal. The Hovel passed into private hands in August 2001.
