Hi Yes your right these walls of stone are everywhere here in the UK. They are a barrier to hold livestock, to clearly mark land boundaries, being constructed a long time ago when labour was cheap and the stone readily available locally. The rain and snow cannot damage them, no mortar is used, nobody wants to steal the stone - a perfect job!
