simon howells's conversations

Thanks for your comment Alex. Yes it was built as a refuge but there is no real evidence to support it as ever being used in earnest. As a child I regularly used to swim out with my mother and never found the water warm! Growing up on The IOM has left me with a love of the sea, as well as islands in general. Try looking at my pictures of Crete. A somewhat larger island than Ellan Vannen!

Well spotted sir! Unfortunately my typographical skills do not exceed my historical knowledge. In 2010 I shall commence a series of battlefield tours, 2 in May and June with one in September. These are aimed at the ANSAC veterans and their families, though from my current enquiries they will be predominantly Kiwi. Regards Simon Howells (UK and Crete based)

Peel (Manx: Purt ny hInshey – Port of the Island) is often called the only 'city' in the Isle of Man because it is the home of the Island's cathedral.

Peel was never capital of the Island, but Peel Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Sodor and Man. It is the Island's main fishing port.

Peel is often referred to as the rose red city or sunset city due to the red sandstone used to build the castle and other important buildings.

Val Nice shot of CARRICK bay from Gansey. This reminds me of the times I used to sit in peace and quiet and listen to the Curlews calling. Those were the days, for me.

'Lady Isabella' or the 'Laxy Wheel' should be in LAXEY on the east of the island, NOT in Patrick!
