Greetings from Holland, Erik
Radio Kootwijk was built from 1918-1922 as a means for upholding long distance communications with Indonesia, the former Dutch colony, first as a longwave transmitter and later, form 1929 on, as a shortwave radio transmitter. The immense radio station was placed in Building A, the heart of the complex. This building, also known as 'The Cathedral', was designed by architect Julius Luthmann (1890-1973) who took his inspiration from the famous Sfinx of Gizeh. It's an awesome example of early concrete architecture in Art Deco style, and the location (hidden) in the midst of National Park Hoge Veluwe makes it even more special.
Alternative means of communication developed during the 20th century, and Radio Kootwijk gradually lost it's airwave function. The accompanying 2 high radio masts and towers had been teared down in 1966 and 1980. Nowadays it has no special function anymore, but plans are developed to restore Radio Kootwijk Building A and keep it as a national monument for other purposes.
Wonderful capture - Greetings from Athens.
