This is the remains of a Round Tower.
These towers where used by the monks of the nearby monestary as a sanctuary when raiders, vikings, came calling.
The monks would enter the tower, with their gold and valuables, by way of a doorway about 10 foot from ground-level.
An excellent example of this type of tower can be found in Antrim town. At Co-ords 53,43,26.50 N, 6,12,32.06 W.
