British protection is important since the terrible invasion by forces of the Argentine Military Junta on 2 April 1982. However, with the Argentine surrender on 14 June, 1982, British forces liberated the Falkland Islands.
I was the Radio Operator there in 1990 when it was called Faraday Base. Fantastic views along the peninsula in both directions. Breathtaking and beautiful scenery.
They're not too bad about you taking photographs around that part of the base Noel, but you're not allowed anywhere near the 'other' part, and there are notices saying that lethal force will be taken to anyone trespassing! IE shoot first, ask questions later!

Oh by the way, this is Base W, Wordie base, not Base F, which was Faraday Base (Vernadsky) where I over-wintered in the 90's.
