Sarel2, these are indeed wild; at the time I took this photo, there was 4 such herds in the same area and their numbers ranged from about 12 to 75. The grass was so thick and tall at places as tall or taller than the elephants! On our drve back to our lodge we were confronted by a group of about 20 on the dirt road which were in a protective mood of a month old baby and we backed slowly for half a mile whwn they finally turned sideways into dense forest. That image is yet to appear in Panoromio. There is no such distinction as "savanna" or "forest" elephants among Asiatic elephants. So far Jim Corbett Natl Park in northern India seems to have high elephant density per square mile, probably next to Amboseli, Kenya
Glad to see that there are still wild elephants left in Western Africa, I found a herd in the DRC recently one of the last remaining wild herds of Savannah elephants. Gives me hope for this beautiful continent!
