Virgin Vine is very prevalent in the Baronnies valley in the Hautes-Pyrénées, France. What is particulary striking about this plant is how it turns a bright, bright red in the fall. This picture is undoctored and the colors are as they were originally photographed.

This is farm, cattle and horse country. This particular field in the village of Esparros in Les Baronnies valley has a number of white stallions an mares, who spend most of their day frolicking and grazing.

Once a year the farmers in the small village of Esparros get together for a contest where they get to show off their best livestock... limited to sheep and goats. Of course, this is more of an excuse to leave the farm and chew the fat with the neighbors than it is a har core competition. But the day is spent peacefully and termites with a dinner and awards at the Salle de Fete.

Thanks for the correction on thelast name. I thought that I had caught that correction earlier, so for whatever reason, you got it and I did not.

In any case, We considered it to be a real privilege to meet Margaret. It is not often these days that you can meet a real explorer!

Picture taken in Feb, 2008. These buildings are where the farmers in the Pyrénées live during the summer while they allow their vaches (cows) to graze in the highland fields. Judging from the excellent condition of all but 3 of the buildings, one cannot help but think that they now serve more the purpose of vacation homes. With the advent of 4 wheel drive transportation, the need to spend protracted time in this remote location with the herd has been diminished.
