As a tourist, you are under pretty tight control, but as long as you have the right attitude about it, you will get along with your guides.
In the 20 days I was there I had one unauthorized conversation with some school kids, one of whom could speak English. They were very interested to be speaking to an American and desperately wanted to have a picture with me (which they could keep).
