British naval commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean, Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Codrington,the French Admiral Henri de Rigny and a Russian Admiral Lodewijk Heyden , on either side there is a Turkish and a Venetian canon. Pylos was the site of the battle of Navarino ,it became the turning point in Greece's War of Independence. The 26 British, French and Russian fleets under the command of Admiral Codrington took up position around Pylos bay on 20 October 1827 and sank 53 ships of Ibraham Pashas the son of Muhammad Ali . The atrocities committed by his forces against the Greek population made him the most reviled figure in Europe. there were 4,109 dead or wounded Turks, Egyptians and Tunisians in this battle.
