Unos de los aspectos más vistosos de este festival es el lanzamiento de polvo de colores, preferentemente rojo o rosa, el cual es proyectado con efusividad sobre individuos y calles, tapizándolo todo de un intenso colorido. Este polvo de color, denominado Gulal y es lanzado con frecuencia en otras celebraciones como el Holi o Festival de Primavera o usado en estado viscoso, mezcladose con aceites de sándalo, en el característico Bindi o punto rojo en la frente de los hinduistas.
