This is the house of Wilmer McLean and it was in the front parlor that Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia contrary to many people's belief that the surrender was in the Appomattox court house. "Appomattox Court House" is actually the name of the town and in 1865, it was the county seat.
McLean's house was used instead of the court house because Virginia was a state in rebellion and to have conducted the surrender in the court house would have been to lend legitimacy to the rebel government. This was something the Lincoln administration wanted to avoid at all costs.
McLean's homes provides an interesting story. He originally lived in Northern Virginia close to Bull Run, site of the first major battle of the Civil War. During the battle, the Confederate commander, General Beauregard, used his home to conduct the battle. The Union got wind of this and promptly turned their artillery on it.
After the battle, McLean moved south to avoid the conflict and he settled in Appomattox Courthouse. He is quoted as saying (loosely): The war began in my kitchen and ended in my front parlor."
