The hill in front has a double-walled promontory fort, probably pre-Celtic. My theory is that this was the Bran Dún, the fort of Bran. There are a number of placenames in his memory. Mythical deity. On Anglicisation and/or latinisation this became Brandon and easily associated with "Brendan" who had a precarious toehold on the old votive mountain of Sliabh Daghdha, which is now known as Mount Brandon. "Brandon" is a place name in the English West Country.
