It's actually called Gore Brook retaining the original "Gore" from the original Roman name for Gorton which was "Gore Ton" meaning "Muddy Town". It's not for paddling in!!

It's an Ordnance Survey Benchmark (albeit one which has fallen over!). It gives a level in relation to Ordnance Survey Datum (taken as mean sea level in Newlyn, Cornwall).

If you get an O.S. map, you'll be able to find it and see how far above or below Datum that exact spot is.
