Maringa was elevated to the status of municipality in 1951, breaking up is Mandaguari. As initially planned urban layout and modernist, following the principle of Ebenezer Howard Garden City, underwent rapid growth during the following decades, resulting in nuclei and peripherals like Sarandi Paiçandu. Still, the city keeps rates high quality of life, preserving large areas within the urban area of native forest and the forest nursery, the Pioneer Park (Grove II) and near the Inga, the latter being open to the public. It also includes smaller fragments as the Cinquantenaire Park, or private areas and a large network of conservation areas in the valleys. The county name is of indigenous origin: a legend portrays an Indian who had pretty much the name Mary, and lived in the place where the fruit was abundant Inga (type of pod). Hence the true name of Maringá (Maria + Inga )
