VIRX #7059 & Vancouver Island Rail Tours Ltd

VIRX #7059 is an ex CN GP9RM, Class GS-418c rebuilt from GP9 4472 in 1992. This unit started its life as a GP9 in 1955, originally CN 2021, re-numbered as 4472 in 1956 and re-built to a GP9RM in 1992 as CN 7059 with Wide-Vision on the short hood; controls are still on the right side with long hood forward. After 52 years serving CN mainly in eastern Canada and the north-eastern US, she was retired and sold to Vancouver Island Railtours (VIRX) in 2007.

Serving V. Island Rail Tours ... UNIT SOLD The ICF would not approve any of our Business Plans for a Tea Train and the company owner was forced to sell the unit due to high costs and no revenue...

There is a lot of potential for this unit on the island; particularly the Port Alberni Subdivision. Our vision is to use the 12.7 miles of railway between Parksville and Cameron Lake ( east side of the wooden trestles ) and look into an operation. We cannot traverse the wooden trestles along the lake with large rail equipment due to their condition. Click Here to support us in getting funding by signing the petition. 7059 would be used for this operation to Cameron Lake.
