Retired. Evolutionary biologist by training (PhD Harvard, 1973). Did extensive field work in southwest USA and all of Mexico north of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and will be posting some pictures from those days. Worked in industry as technical writer, documentation manager, documentation and knowledge mangement systems analyst and designer from 1982 through mid 2007 - from January 1990 for Tenix Defence. For part of this time Tenix was the largest defence engineering project manager in Australia.
Moved to Australia in 1977 for a University of Melbourne Fellowship and married Ros, an Australian from Queensland, then went back to to University of Maryland for a year in 1989. Returned to Melbourne in 1980 and have been there since.
Except for the old Mexican and California pictures from my early years, other pictures that will be uploaded as I scan them are Bill and Ros shots from the Washington DC area, Australia and our respective travels - including many from Ros's travels before I met her. Insofar as possible, we will try to work out dates.
WPHall's conversations
Well, it seems kind of fun to argue about this here...maybe some others will eventually chime in too. But...from what you just said, you kinda nail your own coffin, as only Fox has a road up its north side. FJ has the long access road, clear on GE, on its south side and never has had one on its north. I'm not sure how you could have been at Fox when you say you weren't south of FJ, but I can assuredly say that this pic CANNOT be of the FJ glacier...because, well, it just isn't a photo of the FJ. If you Google Image search Fox Glacier, I think you'll immediately see. Whaddaya think Bill??....scott
Thanks for the correction. As an Aussie (expat American) I was trying to reconstruct our trip from Google Maps and a road atlas. I used a name from one of these sources.
Although we only had 5 days, I loved the South Island, especially the west side, as being close to an Eden.
Beautiful shot.
Arif,
Thanks for the comment. The Wellington shots are followed by a series on the InterIslander through Queen Charlotte Sound to Picton South Island and then down the West Coast to Franz Joseph Glacier.
I think some of these are better than the Wellington series.

Bill
Please help me locate this view on the map. It was taken at a cafeteria rest stop between Waitomo and Karapiro Dam - on a bus tour from Auckland, Waitomo Caves, to Rotorua in September 2003. The resturant was associated with a fruit packing shed that also sold retail. When we were there they were selling very small mandarins - a variety I have not seen anywhere else. I have the impression that the route we followed did not pass twice through Hamilton. I also have the impression that we followed secondary highways between Otorohanga and Karapiro. The other alternative is that Auckland-Waitomo leg followed Highway 39 and 3 on the Waitomo-Karapiro leg.
Unfortunately Google has mapped none of the intervening area between Waitomo and Karapiro at sufficient resolution to identify suspect buildings.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Coming from the state of Victoria in Australia, in the midst of a decade long drought, Roslyn and I are fascinated by water in the landscape.
Mt Kensington to at the left edge, Mt Cook to the far right, showing the distinctive bite out of the NE flank of the peak.
Mt Kensington is off the left side of the photo.

This is one of several spectacular mountain views along the West Coast Highway between Hokitika and Franz Joseph. Despite similarities, including the land slip on NE slope, this is definitely not Mt Cook - which is also visible in one of the sequence of photos from this stop.
