This is not from a town called Bemberg, it's the smokestack of the old American Bemberg Rayon Factory in Elizabethton, TN. The plant was very important to the war effort in World War II because it made parachute cloth for the Army Air Force and other paratroopers. It was opened to manufacture artificial silk in 1926 by the largely German owned corporation VGF, who two years later opened another rayon plant next door called American Glanzstoff, which became known as North American Rayon Corporation. The 2 plants used different methods to produce rayon for many uses, originally for clothing fabrics but eventually for tires. American Bemberg closed in the 70's, but NARC hung on into the 90's. Both eventually closed due to EPA regulations that required water treatment that made them largely unprofitable, although it took a fire that lasted a week to kill North American Rayon in February 2000.
The Gaylord Apts was built in the early 1920's. The lobby has a small display of photos and items from those early days. You can go in and take a look. Now days it is apts for rent. Good restaurant and bar downstairs (HMS Bounty).

Bunch of Korean shops etc... you can get live seafood here ("live" as in "alive"... take a vegetarian friend... and lose a friend).
