Hans Hartings's conversations
The eternal flame of Seneca and Pliny which is the Chimaera. Captain Beaufort in 1818 reported it as 'a brilliant and perpetual fire which no water would quench, and which would not roast stolen meat' (The Lycian Shore: Freya Stark, 1956).

evangelio, I have a different point of view on that picture. On the surface it may seem to be a romantic object, but if you have a closer view, you see signs of poverty and poor life conditions. In those days, Greece prepared to join the European Union (than called EG). All the fishermen (if they are not dead already or retired or have moved elsewhere) should be in the Tourism industry.(Look at a contemporary photo:http://www.panoramio.com/photo/24218890) Probably those ex-fishermen have a better life, although the small harbour doensn't look more impressive than 29 years ago. Your statement remembered me on a german couple, we met in Kissamos in 1981: They feared, the "Socialism" (they meant "PASOK") would spoil the traditional greek way of live. But in reality, it was the European Union and Capitalism, who changed it. And I think, most greek people appreciate, that they no longer do have to live "traditional greek lifestyle", but only have to simulate it for the tourists: Sirtaki, bouzouki, souflaki, and all that Euro-fishing stuff. This is such a deserted part of the state. It is so good that the Native people of Warm Spring's made Kah-nee-ta Resort to go to and swim and rest at. I love it there, I have gone there many times.

This seems to be taken at the basin in Agios Nikolaios, but definitely not in Iraklion.
