There is evidence that man was living on the west hill before the iron age. there was almost certainly a forticifacion on this site during the saxon period, when hastings was an important trading town, with a fine harbour. The 1200´s were a time of unprecedented storm, causing huge changes to the coastline around hastings. The castle ruins became the property of the Pelham family in 1591, and the site was used for farming for centuries.
