The hole appeared towards the middle of the 1500 yard long seafront promenade, about 6 or 7 yards behind the seawall proper.
An underground river (Eastbrook) heads towards the sea in this direction and there are a number of very small freshwater springs on the pebble beach below the seawall at low tide. No shipping passes anywhere near this location.
