If you get me started on Iceland I'll probably never stop! My father was stationed at Keflavik Naval Base when I was 9, 10 and 11 years old. Before moving on base we rented a house in Vogar on a sheep farm. There were so many fun things to do and explore there - the beach where we'd light huge bonfires, the foothills where my brother's caught a mink, the barn where we'd play and then have to hide from the sheep farmer - I can honestly say it was one of the very best times in my life - no responsibilities, no worries, just fun!
We also became great friends with the Icelandic family that lived nearby (there were only two American families who lived in Vogar - most lived in Kevlavik). We stayed in touch with them for 35 years or so after leaving, exchanging Christmas cards every year until my mom passed (she was good at that, me not too good!).
Anyway, this picture reminds me of an old boat that was at the beach where my brothers and I would play - I've got a picture somewhere, I'll have to look for it!
Happy New Year to you Paolo - and thanks for your note!
The position of the mark in the map is correct. This picture was taken on road F910 at the beginning of the black sand desert SW of Askja. In other picture from the same place, taken with a shorter focal lenght, Askja is on the left and Vadalda on the right. Thank you
