Elizabeth Koning makes portraits of adults and children, grown still, soberly, in almost painted surroundings. Her works seem like a journey through art history, sometimes chronological, sometimes suddenly leaping through time. Icons from our unconscious world, which carry her personal picture language. Elizabeth is combining the Italian portrait art with pure Dutch cloudy skies. They almost look like the renaissance portraits of Bellini, Rafaël, Holbein. At the same time Dutch landscape painters like Jacob van Ruisdael and Cornelis Vroom come into memory. The persons seem lifelike. For her portraits she uses the same technique as the Italian masters from the renaissance – only Elizabeth Koning paints with pixels instead of paint. In her photo works a tranquillity is visible, fascinated by the elements which lie behind the immediate surface of the visual world.
