The floating bridge is the first bridge of its kind in the world. Its slender arch floats on the over 300m deep fjord and is only fixed in position by its abutments at each end. 7 pontoons made of high strength and low weight concrete carry the superstructure, which is a truss made of tubular steel members. Each pontoon is divided into 9 separate cells and floats with its bottom approx. 5m below the sea surface. Flexible steel rod connections at each end of the bridge transmit compression and tension forces from wind, waves and current to the abutments that are anchored in solid rock.
