salstra's conversations

Hi all, I was at 6E in 68-69. Ran the BX and was part of the electronics crew. We installed the house around the mobile gear out back that year. Also there when the Carabiniere had the shoot out with Scopolini's Mafia family I was able to ride the cop's helicopter after it was over. I have photos of the site. Found a dead Italian on our road up while walking to Gambari on day. Made the Napoli papers. Great Fun. I always took Georgia and Spot for walks along the roads and in the forest. I was the one that got Spot well when he showed up with a slit throat from being tied up with string by someone in the area. He became #2 dog to Georgia. I really enjoyed my time there as I got to Brendisi and Taoramina a lot.

I was the third permanent party ever assigned to site 4-Charlie. (SSgt ? Weaver and A2C Ron Segars preceded me.) When I arrived in February 1965, the site was under construction, with nothing complete except for the power plant. We lived in the Petite Hotel in Tempio, and two-man Power Pro teams worked 24 on and 24 off. Getting to and from the site was treacherous in the snow because not all of the road was paved at the time. It was quite an adventure for an 18-year-old kid a month out of Sheppard. I'm thinking that the chow hall/rec room were fininished some time in March or April '65, along with the barracks. At that point, we moved to the site. I left there in May '66. I remember Gino Trioli (and his buddy Larry Early, both from Worcester, MA) quite well, as I do almost all of the folks who helped to get the site on its feet. I have quite a few photos of the site in those old days that I'll try to get posted here. You can't live in the past, but it's great to revisit those old days now and again.
