That is the beaver lodge, the dams are long, thin and hold water back. We are being over run by beavers in Southern Ontario. I photographed one dam last weekend which was 80 m. long, I have see some 4 m. high and they dont leak water. Some beaver ponds around here are now a km. long and that is within a 15 minute drive of urban areas.
