Middle Ages Fortress Cherven is located about 30 km. south of Ruse, at the road to the town of Dve Mogili, in the region of Polomieto, next to a village of the same name, having it from the Middle Ages. At first, the locality was populated by the Thracians in the 12th – 6th century BC. Romans settled on these lands in the 1st century AD. Initially the castle was build during the time of the Roman Emperor Justinian , in the 6th century. Later, the town was invaded by the Protobulgarians. Byzantium construction was significantly distinguished by Bulgarian one, with the larger stone blocks.

The Mezek Fortress, 6.5 decares (6,500 m2) in area, is claimed to be among the best preserved Bulgarian medieval castles. It dates to the 11th century. Along with the Thracian tombs, it was studied by a team under archaeologist Bogdan Filov in 1931–1932. The castle has nine towers, five of which lie at the vulnerable south wall. The Mezek Fortress was built out of stone, with two decorative lines of bricks on the outside. It suffered some destruction around 1900, when stones from the fortress were used for the construction of Ottoman barracks in Svilengrad.[3]

It is situated near the village of Matochina 40 km from Svilengrad. The inner fortress, the battle tower and part of the double fortification wall around the peak are preserved. Bukelon fortress is also famous for the battle of Adrianople between the Romans and the Goths, which took place in 378 and in which the Romans were defeated. Here in 1205 the army of Tsar Kaloyan defeated the Crusaders and took Emperor Baldwin a prisoner.

The cave church lies 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) southwest of the village. It is a rectangular room with an arch carved out of the rock. The cella or naos is 9.9 metres (32 ft) wide and up to 5 metres (16 ft) high. The entrance to the church is an overarched passage 4.4 metres (14 ft) long and 3 metres (9.8 ft) high.
